Dear fellows, today we come to a new stop for our journey in Qur’an’s country. Today we will continue our lesson with a new chapter. Sura of Al-u Imran.
The Al-u Imran chapter has taken its name from a family we have encountered in 33 verses. Hence the name, Al-u Imran means Imran’s family. According to the stories the “Imran” name is the name of the father of Moses and Aaron. It’s also the name of the grandfather of Mary, mother of Jesus. That’s why the family includes Jesus, Mary –his mother-, Hanne –her mother-, so with that family tree it also includes the prophets Zachariah and John the Baptist.
So whether the name is taken for the father of Moses and Aaron, or the grandfather of Mary, based on the event we will see in this chapter, it’s obvious the need for this name.
The chapter of Al-u Imran has Madina origin. Both in Otto, Ibn Abbas and Cafer chronologies, this chapter has come as the third after Baqarah and Enfal chapters. So the arrival and origin of this verse has no debate over it.
According to the records, the first 83 verses came down at the ninth year of Hejira, when the Necran Christians had visited the Islam country. That year had a reputation in history as Am-ul Mufit, The Year of Ambassadors. A large group of Christians in Necran came to Rasulallah when they had learnt that a country was founded by an Islamic prophet and the entire Arab Peninsula was included.
This team was a 64 people group. There were several famous religion scholars in it. These scholars were also the administrators of the Necran country. These people came to Rasullallah and they talked, debated for a few days in prophets masjid. They exchanged their thoughts and ideas. The most focused topic was of course the position of Jesus in Christianic ideology.
Some of the people in that group were taking Jesus as a part of holy trinity, as in one of the three elements of god, some were thinking him as the son of god.
Also some were mentioning him with the Holy Spirit and announcing Jesus as a god. So there wasn’t a consensus between themselves as well.
Rasulallah had argued with them about the origin of Jesus and finally the group gave up. But they didn’t give a straight answer to Rasulallah when they were asked to submit to Islam either. So Rasulallah invited them to Mulaene, a cursing. “Let’s each of us wish for a curse of Allah for the other. Whichever of us is on the path of truth for the ones who is gone astray.” Naturally with the warnings of sane and educated individuals from the group, they backed down from that invitation of mulaene. Because there were many scholars in that group which realized that Rasulallah was indeed a prophet of Allah. So they warned the Necran group saying; “A community which took a curse from a prophet surely gets it.”
Rasulallah hosted the Necran group in Madina for days. They performed their religious prays and duties in prophets masjid with their own ways. Rasulallah hosted them with all his hospitability and sent them off after a few days. They accepted the sovereignty of Islam over their country and with that agreement the visit was ended.
Of course there might be some disagreements for the stories that indicates the reason of arrival for the first 83 verses was this. Because there were some verses among them which talk about or point the jews as well. It’s possible that those verses came down right after the battle of Badir or some during the battle.
The content of this chapter is about warning the Muslims for a danger we may call, “Becoming Christianic-minded”. As you remember the Sura of Baqarah was warning us about the dangers of becoming jew-minded. While we were translating Baqarah, we learnt the dangers of becoming jewminded, step by step with solid historical facts. And now, muslims has been warned about the dangers of falling into christianic mentality.
One of the biggest manifestation of the christanic-minded danger is interpreting the basic reference and main sources of religion, wrong. As in causing a falsification, a corruption in semantics. Haven’t the christians misinterpret some words and sentences in Bible, when they falsely give Jesus a godlike position. The ideology of three; the belief of trinity which we see it as a shirk; the father, son and holy spirit mentality; don’t you know that it is a belief manifested from the semantic corruption of some verses in Bible?
So while Qur’an wants us to pay attention to this fact, it warns us about closed meaning, figurative approaches. So we may name this tendency of misinterpreting the words or meanings of texts, corrupting the verses meanings unintentionally or intentionally which leads people to understand Allah’s words (mostly the closed meaning verses, the speeches which cannot be understood at first look, verses which point out signs of the unknown or the verses which tries to simplify the meanings of a difficult subject with humans simple words) totally wrong and false at the end; as the tendency of becoming christian-minded.
That’s why Qur’an handles the situation with a verse, the seventh verse of this chapter to establish a seperation for the entire Qur’an. In that verse the verses are seperated as closed meaning, figurative and open meaning, literal. The most obvious answer to the question of why this topic has been processed in this sura; is because it contains a warning for muslims against the dangers of falling into christianic mentality.
1-) Eliif, Laaam, Miiiym;
1-) Eliif, Laaam, Miiiym. (A.Hulusi)
1 – Elif, Lam Mim, (A.Yusuf Ali)
We had made the tafsir of these “Hurufu Mukadda”, (Private Letters) in the first verse of Al-Baqarah. Now I want to dedicate the explanation here to the lesson we had studied there and move on without further information. And yet, it would be appropriate to give a short summary.
Eliif, Laaam, Miiiym; You may see this as “A-B-C” or “Elif-Be-Te-Fe”. Almost one fourth of the entire Qur’an’s chapter, the suras begin with these kind of letters. They are called “Huruf-u Mukadda”, “Private Letters” and they must be read seperately. As in letter by letter like they are a sentence on their own. That’s why they are also called private.
According to one explanation, these lettes are actually an explanation saying; “O humans, the text you hold in your hands, the text which Allah addresses you by, they are made from these letters. Look, Allah informs you the celestial message with these letters.” According to this aspect, if you put all suras which begin with Mukaddaat together, you see that they are always with one, two, three, four or five. They varies between one and five. Five at most, one at least.
An interesting coincidence since al words in Arabic language have one to five letters in it. They are either one lettered, two, three, four or five lettered words. You cannot find a single word which includes more than five letters in it. You might think about the message here like this then.” Here is the celestial speech, comes with a form of this languages form. Allah chose this language, this speech as a tool, a path to deliver the message to the entire humanity.”
One of the proofs for people who defend this aspect is; all chapters begin with Huruf-u Mukadda, also have references to revelations, Qur’an and celestial speech. There might be an opposition for this though. Because there are several chapters which talks about revelations and celestial messages but don’t start with these private letters. There are more than a few in fact. So it is possible to use the deductions of Caliphs Abu Bekir, Omar, Otto and Ali for this particular idea. “Every book has a secret, a mystery, a code, a key. Qur’an’s code, key is these letters.” Allah knows best. This chapter of Alu-Imran starts the speech with the introduction of Allah right after private letters. There are information about the celestial identity which says this.
2-) Allahu la ilahe illa HUvel Hayy’ul Kayyum;
He is Allah; there is no god or godhood, only ‘HU’ (the Name HU denotes the Absolute Essence, which can never be conditioned or limited by the corporeal worlds and/or any concepts. It is usually followed by another Name to signify the quality that becomes manifest through HU, in regards to the relevant topic), Hayy (life itself) and Qayyum (everything finds life and subsists with HU). (A.Hulusi)
Allah. There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-Subsisting, the Supporter of all. (A.Yusuf Ali)
Allahu la ilahe illa HU Allah. There is no god, only Allah. El Hayy’ul Kayyum; So who is this Allah? Allah is the source, the foundation of life and existence. It’s an identity. This verse informs us about the celestial identity. Our Rabb begins with an introduction of Himself while addressing us, talking us. This way, we are able to understand the existence behind those words; the being who talks to humans,opens a dialogue with us. And we realize that Allah is the one who has no partners, no visual, no similar and Allah is the unique source and foundation of Allah life and existence.
So the message here is this. “You, the humanity which has met these text through the history, don’t you forget that you are also in this existence, your foundation is also Allah. Your sources belong to Allah. So don’t just act like you meet a random speech in front of Allah’s words. Don’t ignore while you read and listen the words of Allah. Don’t you ever forget that the existence who addresses you, who talks to you, who converses you is the source and foundation of all lives and existence, including yours.”
3-) Nezzele aleykel Kitabe Bil Hakki musaddikan lima beyne yedeyhi ve enzelet Tevrate vel Inciyl;
He, as the very reality itself, revealed what is in your hands (disclosed in your consciousness), the Book (knowledge of the reality and sunnatullah) confirming the Truth from the past. He had also revealed the Torah (knowledge disclosed to Moses) and the Gospel (knowledge disclosed to Jesus). (A.Hulusi)
It is He Who sent down to thee (step by step), in truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Torah (of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) … (A.Yusuf Ali)
Nezzele aleykel Kitab; Allah sent down the Book to you step by step. Bil Hakki musaddikan lima beyne yedeyh This book, this truth which stands the tides of time, which confirms all truth from the past, this celestial message… It is Allah who sent down to you step by step, one after another. The lima beyne yedeyh expression here has a literal meaning of between two hands, as in right in front of you, but if you add it to the whole verse the expression gains a metaphorical meaning of “All truths above time and space is also in the content of Qur’an.” More than it’s only about the old testaments, the message has a wider meaning which includes all the revelations from the past and the aspect of their permenancy.
In fact this expression doesn’t just points to a time period in the past. It is the opening of something right in front of you. As in the closest thing to a person. So what should we understand from this then? “All the essences of past revelations, all the permanent nature of the messages timeless truths has reached to you. and this book contains all of them. It is Allah who sent down such a revelation to you. ve enzelet Tevrate vel Inciyl; This meaning we discussed until now is proved by this last sentence. Allah had sent down Torah and Gospel as well.
Tora is the Hebrew name of law, hence the name. It is also called Pentatoc. Accoring to old greek language it means first five books. Today we called Tora as the first five books of Bible. We see the Tora for that five books within Bible.
Also when Qur’an talks about Tora, the message is directly about that section. Otherwise the Bible which contains Old and New Testaments isn’t called the Tora since it contains the 39 books which belongs to the entirety of Isrealian prophets. Qur’an never calls it Tora anywhere in its verses. It is referenced as Book. But we know that here Qur’an points the direction of the first five books of Bible when it mentions Tora.
Gospel name comes also from a greek origin of the word evangelic or evangelos which also has a meaning of herald in the same language. As you know the Gospel is the name of the first writings which was collected after the 60. year of Jesus’s death. But if you ask that this Gospel is the truth Allah mentions in Qur’an, then I say it is obvious that Gospel mentioned in these verses are nothing but the truths revealed to Prophet Jesus.
4-) Min kablu huden lin Nasi ve enzelel Furkan* innelleziyne keferu Bi ayatillahi lehum azabun shediyd* vAllahu Aziyz’un Zuntikam;
As HUDA for people (to guide them to the reality, to show them the right path). He also revealed the Furqan (the ability to distinguish right from wrong, the good from the bad). Certainly, those who cover and deny the signs of Allah (the manifestations of His Names) will have severe suffering. Allah is the Aziz, the Zuntaqim (enforces the consequences of actions without any sympathy). (A.Hulusi)
Before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion (of judgment between right and wrong). Then those who reject Faith in the Signs of Allah will suffer the severest penalty, and Allah is Exalted in Might, Lord of Retribution. (A.Yusuf Ali)
Min kablu huden lin Nas In the past, Allah sent down the truth as a guide o humanity. ve enzelel Furkan Allah also revealed the Furkan.
Furkan is a feature of revelations. Not just Qur’an. It’s a feature of all revelations and Qur’an is also included. So it’s not just specific for Qur’an. This Furkan feature is used for both Qur’an, Gospel and Tora and other revelations. So it has a feature of including all Allah’s messages. What is this feature then? It’s the criterion of differentiating the right from wrong, good from bad, true from false, hakk from superstitions, beautiful from ugly. That’s why all revelations have this feature. And since Qur’an has Furkan, it becomes the first and foremost feature. And also the reason why one of the other names of Qur’an is Furkan.
innelleziyne keferu Bi ayatillahi lehum azabun shediyd For those who deny Allah’s messages, they will have severe sufferings. vAllahu Aziyz’un Zuntikam; Allah is Aziyz (Exalted in Might) and Zuntakiym (Lord of Retribution)
Dear friends, our Rabb introduces the revelations in this verse. In fact he has been revealing His identity since the last verse. We understand from these verses that what form of Allah we have been addressed, how has Allah addressed us. We also realize these verses have big blessings for us. These verses show us the true meanings of Allah’s taking notice of us humans, turning to us and sending us messages.
Of course we also see here with metaphorical expressions of people who become alienated from revelations and how great suffering they will meet, a horrible catastropy they will fall. Actually coming this verses end with a form of Aziyz and Zuntikam, as in introducing Allah as Aziyz’un Zuntikam; shows us two distinctive names of Allah. Allah being Aziyz means even the entire humanity unite against Allah’s words, even they all rebel against Allah, Allah wouldn’t lose anything from His might. Nothing can shake Allah’s might. Allah also is Zuntikam Lord of retribution, owner of revenge.
To be accurate, it’s not revenge as we come to an understanding in our lives. Those are obviously metaphorical expressions. These words are used to simplify the truths of the unknown and truths of Allah’s being for simple human minds. Otherwise it is impossible to describe these names with their full meanings. But it is clear that revenge holds the meaning of punishment, retribution by its nature.
So here, Allah expresses, He will punish those who betray Allah and defy the messages, the revelations.
5-) InnAllahe la yahfa aleyHİ shey’un fiyl Ardi ve la fiys Sema’;
Allah! Nothing in the heavens (the dimension of consciousness – angelic realm – the quantal dimension; the essence of matter) and the earth (dimension of matter – the body – the earth) is hidden from Him (because He comprises the essence of everything with His Names. Concepts such as hidden or apparent apply only to ‘things’ or thingness)! (A.Hulusi)
From Allah, verily nothing is hidden on earth or in the heavens. (A.Yusuf Ali)
InnAllahe la yahfa aleyHİ shey’un fiyl Ardi ve la fiys Sema’; and after this, Allah wants us to take attention to His identity and orders us: Nothing is hidden on earth or in heavens from Allah. Nothing on earth or in heavens is a secret for Allah, hidden from Allah.
This expression in this verse gains a very different meaning within this group of verses which talks about Allah. According to this, not only the actional attitude of humanity for revelations is revealed and accounted for but the heart and mind are also within Allah’s gaze. If nothing is hidden on earth or in heavens from Allah then how can a man hide his attitude about the speech of Allah from Him? This attitude whether in his heart or in his mind or in his behaviours; Allah surely knows about them all. And continues.
6-) HUvelleziy yusavvirukum fiyl erhami keyfe yesha’* la ilahe illa HUvel Aziyz’ul Hakiym;
It is HU who shapes (forms, programs) you in the womb (mother’s womb – in Arabic rahim; the productive mechanism within your essence: rahimiyyah) as He wishes. There is no god, only HU, the Aziz, the Hakim. (A.Hulusi)
He it is Who shapes you in the wombs as He pleases. There is no god but He, the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (A.Yusuf Ali)
HUvelleziy yusavvirukum fiyl erhami keyfe yesha’ who shapes you in the wombs as He pleases. Why is it needed for an expression like this. Remember the entry of this chapter. First verses indicated that Allah is the source of existence, right? Both the source and fountation of exitence. So now, Allah as the source of life and existence explains how He creates here. As in how is Allah El Hayy, El Kayyum? How is Allah be the source of life and Absolute Life. This verse explains this fact.
HUvelleziy yusavvirukum fiyl erhami keyfe yesha‘ It is Allah who shapes you in the wombs as He pleases. la ilahe illa HU Yes, here it is again. There is no god, only Allah. And Allah is vel Aziyz’ul Hakiym; Exalted in Might. Above all imperfection, the perfect one. Allah is Mighty and all Might comes from Allah. Even all existence go against Allah, nothing is lost in Allah’s might. But also, there is wisdom for everything Allah does.
So if you ask a question like this; why did Allah create people who go against Him, who rebel Him, who disobey His orders, who turn their backs to Allah even Allah shows the mercy to face them; why did Allah create man who have this attitude of pushing Allah away? Here is the answer. Because Allah is Hakiym. Allah has wisdom. If there is no evil, can goodness be known? If there is no uglyness, what would be the value of beauty? You cannot appreciate the light if there is no darkness.
7-) HUvelleziy enzele aleykel Kitabe minhu ayatun muhkematun hunne Ummul Kitabi ve uharu muteshabihat* fe emmelleziyne fi kulubihim zeygun feyettebiune ma teshabehe minhubtigael fitneti vebtigae te’viylih* ve ma ya’lemu te’viylehu illAllah* ver Rasihune fiyl ilmi yekulune amenna Bihi kullun min indi Rabbina* ve ma yezzekkeru illa ulul elbab;
It is HU who has revealed to you the KNOWLEDGE (Book). Some of its signs are clear (open and net commands) and comprise the basis – foundation of the knowledge (Book) – and some of it is allegorical (metaphoric and symbolic expressions). Those with deviation (ulterior motives, distorted thoughts) in their hearts, judge with the allegorical verses, interpreting them for the purpose of causing provocation. Only Allah knows their (true and precise) interpretation. Those who are grounded in knowledge (deep contemplators) say, “We believe, all of it is from our Rabb.” And none can discern this except those who have reached the essence (the intimates of reality through whom Allah hears, sees and speaks; ulul albab). (A.Hulusi)
He it is Who has sent down to thee the Book: In it are verses basic or fundamental (of established, clear meaning); they are the foundation of the Book: others are not entirely clear. But those in whose hearts is perversity follow the part thereof that is not clear, seeking discord, and searching for hidden meanings in it, but no one knows its interpretation except Allah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: “We believe in the Book; the whole of it is from our Lord:” and none will grasp the Message except men of understanding. (A.Yusuf Ali)
HUvelleziy enzele aleykel Kitab Again Allah is the one who sent down to you the Book. This part came exactly like this before as you remember. But here we see it again. Especially for the prophet first reader of this verse and following him, all the old and modern readers of this verse. It says again; Allah is the one who sent down to you the Book. You should put yourselves for the “you” part in this verse and think like these verses came down for “you.” Like you are the ones who take the verses. You are directly in contact with Allah and Allah is in contact with you. If you see the situation with this heart, with this state of mind, you’ll see that your perception becomes different.
minhu ayatun muhkematun hunne Ummul Kitab Some of its verses are clear and absolute. ve uharu muteshabihat And some of its verses are, muteshabih. We should stay on this topic for a while. Muteshabih.
Muteshabih means similar. Look alike, similarity. But this classification is used in only one place in Qur’an and it is this verse. In fact this verse we have been reading is one of the key texts in Qur’an. This particular expression… This sentence is one of the key text to realize the true meaning of Qur’an. If a person is willing to approach this celestial message, if he is willing to put this text to a classification; he should take this expression in this verse unders serious consideration.
There are some key texts in Qur’an to help people opening the truths to humans. This text is one of the keys, the first one in fact. This sentence gives us the seperation between Muhkem (Clear) and Muteshabihat (Unclear).
Muhkem, clear, strengthened, clarified, absolute. We just translate muhkem. We open it, open its meaning and translate. But there’s also a muteshabih. Not with a single meaning, not clear, hard to understand with first glance or never to be fully comprehended alone. Those are muteshabih. So what do we do with those verses? We use Te’vil.
Clear verses give us the answer for “What does Allah say?” It’s their purpose. But unclear verses always comes with questions like, “What’s the message of Allah here, what should we understand from it?” And right at that time we should be able to explain Allah’s intented message there. This is what te’vils difference from simple translations. Clear verses explanation lays on the literal semantic areas. Unclear verses explanation is morely in lexical semantics territory.
For these unclear verses, or the verses which involve symbolic or alegoric expressions, we can say that they are the Windows opening to the unknown. You can seperate the text into two sections. The side which forces people minds, challenge their comprehensions; more truely the side which cannot penetrate peoples doubtful mind blocks and gush out from the minds withour fully absorbed. It’s two sides. Almost like one side faces the earth and the other side looks at the greatest of the greatest. This dimension which exceeds the norms of texts, this is the dimension of muteshabih, unclear. We can seperate these verses in three sections.
1-The symbolical expessions. The expressions about Allah, angels, djinns, devil, heaven or hell. All relevant verses may be included this section. They gain unclear verse titles because of their being the keys to unknown natures. Unknown involves the truths beyond humans simple comprehension. The verses about these topics. As in the verses about Allah, angels, djinns, heaven, hell or afterlife, their jobs are limiting the truths of the unclear to a level of humans simple comprehension. They turn the truth to human language. Or we can say, they translate a far beyond language to a human tongue.
Of course in that process, the chosen words are from humans language. The images created are from humans material natures. The things people already be known to them. Like to describe heaven, the garden word is used. But people at least know that the metaphorical garden here has no similarity with a simple garden as we know it. Not with a leaf, not with a tree or water as we come to realize. A garden beyond humans capacity, a garden we cannot compare with anything. That’s why these expressions are only symbolic, metaphorical. We should understand that these particular words are chosen only to appeal our comprehension, only to simplify the uncomprehensible truths to limited human minds. Beyond that, they are in the territory of unknown, impossible to grasp the full potential of the truth.
2-Second type of unclear verses is the imaginative expression of a difficult thought. As in an ungraspable concept. For example; the creation of universe. Knowledges beyond our minds horizon. To be able to explain such an existence, a person should push his mind to the limit. So naturally it is impossible to describe such expressions via the things humans are familiar with.
That’s why when Qur’an describes truths, existences like these it uses the anaphor methods like it does for the creation of universe. Qur’an uses anaphoric expressions. The creation of existence, the story of Adam. The manifestation of first people, Allah’s actins over existence and the relation between Allah and people fall under this category.
All these are difficult to explain. They are high and hard thoughts. So naturally it is not possible to fit these thoughts into simple linguistic terms. That’s why it is inevitable to use metaphors to reach the limits of spoken language as well as readers minds. This is the second type of unclear verses.
3-Third type is explaining a simple thought with the enrichments of a language which is called belagat (eloquence). You may come across verses like these. Mainly it is easy to understand an idea with a few and clear words, concepts people may grasp without any effort. But Qur’an may use a mighthy language, an incredible style, a high declaration at that moment. This is one of the method Qur’an uses to address people and deliver the message. So as you can see unclear verses can be collected under these three categories. And all the verses in Qur’an are either muteshabih (unclear) or muhkem (clear) verses.
fe emmelleziyne fi kulubihim zeygun Why did Qur’an make a classification like this. The classification of clear and unclear verses… Qur’an doesn’t explain this just that we know. Actually making this seperation Qur’an wants us to notice a faith problem. This problem is no other that becoming christian-minded itself. Giving other meaning to celestial messages than it’s intended one, abusing the message, blurring the speech. This is another method of corrupting. You may call this the corruption of commentary.
There are two distinct methods are used to destroy celestial messages. It’s either destroying the text itself or pulling the meaning to other sides and giving the celestial messages false meanings, meanings that Allah doesn’t want us to fall into. This is the method Qur’an is warning us here, this second type of corruption and it says;
fe emmelleziyne fi kulubihim zeygun Those with deviation in their hearts, those who have bent, corrupted hearts, feyettebiune ma teshabehe min they go after the muteshabih parts. People who have deviation in their hearts, they go after the unclear parts of celestial messages. Why is that? Sometimes to expoit. Sometimes to abuse. Sometimes because it doesn’t go with their business or just plain they don’t like the message itself. Their inner selves don’t like what the message says. Sometimes they think themselves as a riot against Allah. Because they want to revolt. Also there are some devious hearted people go after the unclear verses because it doesn’t go with their agenda. Whatever the reasons may be, there are always those types of people come throughout the history. Their role is to corrupt the sources of references for faith and belief, even today there are people who undertake this hideous task.
feyettebiune ma teshabehe minhubtigael fitneti vebtigae te’viylih So why they go after these unclear parts; to create sedition. Simply to plant the seeds of corruption in society. Or to make their own Te’vil. Qur’an brings forward these two agenda. To create sedition and to make different Te’vil. What is the reason for Te’vil in this situation? Like I counted before, maybe they have their own plans or they simply don’t like the message itself. Their choices wouldn’t go with Allah’s choice. They are either politically or economically in contradiction with Allah’s orders. Allah’s message. That’s why they choose the way of corrupting the meaning of message instead of trying to destroy or deny it. They bend, they warp, they distort. But where is the real distortion in this scenario? In their hearts. Because those who have distorted eye sight, cannot see the truth right.
And this is the reason why they search the fault, the error, the distortion in what they look, not in their eyesight. They should look for it in their hearts. People who approach the truth with a warped heart, cannot see its nature. Qur’an doesn’t show the truth to people who appoach it with a distorted heart. That’s why Qur’an is shifaa-ul lil mu-minin, cure for those who show faith to itself.
…ve la yeziyduz zalimiyne illa hasara; Isra/82. We reveal Quran, healing and grace for those who believe! But this only increases the frustration of the wrongdoers. Qur’an only increases the harm and frustration of those who have distorted hearts.
ve ma ya’lemu te’viylehu illAllah No one but Allah knows its Te’vil. In other words, we cannot comprehend the truths with their full potential since Allah reduced them to metaphoric expressions, allegoric words in order to make them understandable for mere human minds. Trying to make all those mighty truths fit into our limited mind worlds is impossible. We can only comprehend these truths with similarity principles.
For example we understand heaven as the garden metaphor. Out minds can make way to understanding the concept of heaven by using this abstraction. Beyond that our mind capacity must be more than current state. Beyond that, our minds either go to heaven and see for themselves our need to explore the concept with other ways. Some truths of the unknown are beyond humans grasp.
So we have no choice but to understand the concept with metaphors. We cannot have the capacity to go further than that. We only see the simple copies. It’s not the same as the original. The original is something else entirely. This is the truth that wants to be told here. ve ma ya’lemu te’viylehu illAllah no one but Allah knows its true te’vil, true form.
ver Rasihune fiyl ilmi yekulune amenna Bihi kullun min indi Rabbina those who are grounded in knowledge say: “We believe in the Book, we believe it entirely. kullun min indi Rabbina the whole of it is from our Rabb. They don’t show any hesitation? Why? Because they observe the situation with faith.
Faith is a pre-knowledge. People who have no pre-knowledge of faith and try to reach the celestial messages, surely cannot handle the weight of the truths in these texts. That’s why faith is a necessity in all this. Faith gives humans a front knowledge. With that knowledge, a person may read the subtexts in this text. He can be one with the truths. With the help of celestial messages, a transaction starts with these words and human heart. This is only possible with faith. This is also the reason why Allah starts this text with introducing Himself. Allahu la ilahe illa HUvel Hayy’ul Kayyum; The words starts with that. If you have no faith, if you have no pre-knowledge, the necessary tools, you cannot establish a connection with celestial messages in your hearts and you cannot open your hearts to the very secrets of holy words.
ve ma yezzekkeru illa ulul elbab; The most beautiful expression about the truth came at last at the end of the verse. Only the people of deep understanding may notive these heavy truths. Yes, these truths we have been told since the beginning of this verse, these classifications of truths, the truths we should open ourselves and download to out mind worlds; only the men of deep undertandings have this potential to fully grasp the concept.
😎 Rabbena la tuzig kulubena ba’de iz hedeytena ve heb lena min ledunKE rahmeten, inneKE entel Vehhab;
“Our Rabb, after giving us guidance (enabling us to recognize and discern the reality) do not turn our consciousness (back to the illusory identity – ego based existence), and bestow your grace upon us from your Self (ladun; the potential of the Names comprising my essence). Most certainly you are the Wahhab.” (A.Hulusi)
“Our Lord!” (they say), “Let not our hearts deviate now after Thou hast guided us, but grant us mercy from Thee; for Thou art the Grantor of bounties without measure. (A.Yusuf Ali)
Rabbena Our Rabb! Right here, the celestial mesage of Qur’an turns into a pray rising from humans language to Allah’s domain. It almost like Allah teaches us to pray and what should we want from Him. We learn the needs of ours from Allah again. And we also learn something else. We realize the problems we encountered above are mainly a heart problem, a faith problem and to avoid them, we use this pray.
Rabbena la tuzig kulubena ba’de iz hedeytena ve heb lena min ledunKE rahmeten O our Rabb, after giving us guidance, after making us reach the right path, don’t let our hearts deviate, lost their ways. ve heb lena min ledunKE rahme and bestow your grace upon us from your Self inneKE entel Vehhab; For you are Wahhab, The Grantor of bounties without measure. This is the reason why we ask from you a part of your unlimited and unconditional blessing. This blessing we have asked for is nothing but the constant truth in our hearts, since you are the one who can turn hearts.
Heart means fickle. It cannot stay in one place for long. It’s nature is not constant. The revolution comes from the same root. Always in motion, so we can assume that the power of heart doesn’t have a center. This power is difficult to pinpoint. If you search for people we can see this fact. Some peoples hearts are in their egos. Some are in their stomachs. Some peoples hearts look for their minds for power and some search for their souls. Other peoples hearts may have more terrible places, like down as in lust.
That’s why the real message here is the pray. The linguistic root, foundaton meaning of heart points out this fact. But beyond that I want you to pay attention to the pray, what should we ask from Allah. Moving on.
9-) Rabbena inneKE camiun Nasi liyevmin la raybe fiyh* innAllahe la yuhliful miy’ad;
“Our Rabb, you will surely gather mankind in a period of whose coming there is no doubt. And never will Allah fail to fulfill His promise.” (A.Hulusi)
“Our Lord! Thou art He that will gather mankind together against a Day about which there is no doubt; for Allah never fails in His promise.” (A.Yusuf Ali)
Rabbena inneKE camiun Nasi liyevmin la raybe fiyh Our Rabb, you will surely gather mankind together in that Day which there is no doubt. innAllahe la yuhliful miy’ad; for Allah never fails in His promise
After teaching us this pray, our Rabb shows us the way of how to call for Allah, how to approach the revelations rightly and how to possess a heart like this. And it is time to learn about people who choose denial because they lack these features. Here Allah says;
10-) Innelleziyne keferu len tugniye anhum emvaluhum ve la evladuhum minAllahi shey’a* ve ulaike hum ve kudunnar;
Certainly for the deniers neither their wealth nor their children will benefit them against what becomes manifest from Allah. They are fuel for fire. (A.Hulusi)
Those who reject Faith,- neither their possessions nor their (numerous) progeny will avail them aught against Allah. They are themselves but fuel for the Fire. (A.Yusuf Ali)
Innelleziyne keferu Those who cannot have these hearts, those who reject Faith; len tugniye anhum emvaluhum ve la evladuhum minAllahi shey’a neither their possessions nor their children will benefit them, help them against Allah. The verse says, no possessions, no children, no wealth, no position basically nothing from earth may help a person to stand against Allah. Those who leave Allah will fall into the pull of materials, o friends. Those who leave Allah falls into earthly stuff. And when someone is pulled by materials, that things always pull you further from Allah. That’s why you should hang on to Allah’s blessings, Allah’s mercy with your hearts all the time. That’s the only way of saving yourselves if or when you fall in to earths pull. So that you avoid being lowest of the low (estel-i safilin)
It is like being caught to a flood. A human is like a ship, a heart is like a ship in fact. All the things in this world is an ocean. If the water stays out of the ship, destination doesn’t change. And water is good for the ship if used properly. Like the wealth and position a person have may help him go further if used properly. But if the water is in the ship, surely the ship will sink.
If the world gets into the heart, if the possessions, positions fall into hearts, if money, gold, silver or any kind of earthly gains find their ways to heart; it is the same meaning as the water finds its way to ship. It is the first step of sinking. The souls who hold on to Allah rises. The bodies who hold on to stuff, falls. That’s why your bodies stay on earth with all materials. If you improve, if you work with your souls side, that you may be able to save yourselves from earths pull. Only then you may find peace among great souls. ve ulaike hum ve kudunnar; Those who fall into earthly stuff, they are the fuel for fire.
This is a metaphoric expression like the one above. This verse is among the muteshabih (unclear) verses. Them, being the fuel of fire. Neither can I describe what kind of fire this is nor any of us comprehend. But we are told that this truth is like a material on earth, a burning thing and that’s it. But what kind of fire will it be? Nothing like we have seen before, that’s for sure. This fire will be a catastropy that we have never encountered before. But in our mind world, in our living material concepts, this high truth can only be described with these words. So we take these words as they are and comprehend the situation as it is.
But the people of knowledge, people who have deeper understanding, they don’t downsize the truth to simple metaphors even they are also told the situation with the same simple words. They don’t forget that the real truths have a higher degree, higher value. They don’t think about the simple earthly fire as we know it when they hear the word “fire”. They can see the deeper truth behind those words and comprehend the concepts.
Here, Qur’an gives us an example about the people who treat the celestial message like they are blind and deaf, people who cannot reach the holy revelations as they should. The example is from our history and this historical fact is about the era of pharaohs.
11-) Kede’bi ali fir’avne velleziyne min kablihim* kezzebu Bi ayatina* feehazehumullahu Bi zunubihim* vAllahu shediydul ikab;
(Their course) is just like the dynasty of the Pharaoh and those who came before them. (They had) denied our signs (the manifestations of the Names). And Allah seized them in their error. Allah is severe in recompense (severe in enforcing the due consequence of an offence; shadid al-iqab). (A.Hulusi)
(Their plight will be) no better than that of the people of Pharaoh, and their predecessors: They denied our Signs, and Allah called them to account for their sins. For Allah is strict in punishment. (A.Yusuf Ali)
Kede’bi ali fir’avne velleziyne min kablihim Yes. Their course as in the people who are described above as the rejectors of Faith and people who turn their backs to Allah and pulls back to the earths glamours life of vanity. Their course is just like the dynasty of the Pharaoh and those who came before them.
Qur’an makes a comparison here. Just like Qur’an pulls this example of pharaohs who live hundreds, thousands years ago to the people of Qur’ans first readers in seventh century, we also may pull these examples today from the time. We may see the targets of this verse even today. Just like the groups, societies and masses we encounter today, we can compare them by their courses and the similarty of these courses with the pharaohs and other wrong pathed groups.
What did they do? What are the common features which helps us define them? How can we seperate them from others? This kezzebu Bi ayatina They denied our messages. How can one be pharaoh, how can a society become a pharaoh society. The first feature is this. kezzebu Bi ayatina They denied our messages.
So what is the result? What will happen to a society which denies the celestial messages and slander the revelations Allah sent down? feehazehumullahu Bi zunubihim And Allah seized them in their errors. vAllahu shediydul ikab; For Allah is strict in punishment.
12-) Kul lilleziyne keferu setuglebune ve tuhsherune ila cehennem* ve bi’sel mihad;
Say to the disbelievers (those who deny the reality), “You shall be defeated and gathered in hell… How wretched a resting place!” (A.Hulusi)
Say to those who reject Faith: “Soon will ye be vanquished and gathered together to Hell,-an evil bed indeed (to lie on)!” (A.Yusuf Ali)
Kul lilleziyne keferu setuglebune ve tuhsherune ila cehennem Say to those types, those people who take denial as a job, who resist on denial, say to them; setuglebune you will be defeated. Say to those infidels, those deniers, those ungreatfuls, those blasphemers who turn their backs to Allah after Allah showed His grace by addressing them, those revelation deniers; setuglebune you will be defeated.With your attitudes you will surely be defeated. You will, because you raise your flag against Allah. You become arrogant to Allah. You turn your backs to Allah’s message. You turn your backs to the truth. And the price of rejecting the truth is losing both on earth and in afterlife.
Lose what? First of all, losing yourselves. Because you cannot turn your back to Allah without turning back to yourself. You cannot deny the facts of Allah without denying yourself. That’s why a person who close his eyes to his own truths becomes a stranger to himself. Once he become a stranger to himself, he become a stranger to earth. This process finally leads him to defeat. This is the definition of defeat.
Defeat of what, then? Defeat to earth, you will be vanquished by the things you think you own. You will be defeated to position even you have a greater value than mere materials. Even you have a greated honor than your wealth or your house, your job, your car; even you have more honorable that all of them, in the end those things without any value, those dishonorable materials will defeat you. They will conquer you. Your backs will be floored in this match. You will face the defeat. Because this things you think you own, will own you at the end. The reason is because you turn your backs to Allah. Remember the words above;
en tugniye anhum emvaluhum ve la evladuhum minAllahi shey’a Neither their stuff nor their children will help them stand against Allah. This verse is like a follow-up for this truth. setuglebune ve tuhsherune ila cehennem you will be defeated and exiled to Hell. What an evil bed it is! ve bi’sel mihad; what a wreched bed, what an evil cradle it is.
Actually mihad; comes from mehd. The cradle, which is more meaningful. Because people who have a final destination as hell are spiritually in a kids level. Of course we don’t mean as a purity or innocence, they aren’t clean as a baby but their souls are not grown. Their minds are not fully developed. Their perceptions, their foresight, judgement skills are not developed. They have no sense of seperation the good from bad. Actually they have no developed skills as a soul. That’s why their destination will be thir wreched cradle. They will be bundled in that terrible cradle.
13-) Kad kane lekum ayetun fiy fieteynil tekatâ* fietun tukatilu fiy sebiylillahi ve uhra kafiretun yeravnehum misleyhim ra’yel ayn* vAllahu yueyyidu Bi nasrihi men yesha’* inne fiy zalike le ‘ibreten liulil ebsar;
The truth is there were signs for you and a lesson to be taken from the two groups who met in opposition. While one group was fighting for the cause of Allah, the others were deniers; (the believers) saw with their own eyes that (the deniers) were twice their number. But Allah supports whom He wills with His aid. Certainly there is a great lesson in this for those with insight. (A.Hulusi)
“There has already been for you a sign in the two armies that met (in combat): One was fighting in the cause of Allah, the other resisting Allah. these saw with their own eyes twice their number. But Allah doth support with His aid whom He pleaseth. In this is a lesson for such as have eyes to see.” (A.Yusuf Ali)
Kad kane lekum ayetun fiy fieteynil tekata There is a message for you in the two armies that met in combat. fietun tukatilu fiy sebiylillah One was fighting in the cause of Allah kafiretun yeravnehum misleyhim ra’yel ayn the other resisting Allah yeravnehum misleyhim ra’yel ayn They, true believers… Most of the translators say the situation here is the battle of Badir. But just as the owner of the verse wants us to pay attention to the fact, the conclusion we arrive is a fact throughout the history. The active subject of history is not with the crowds but the few, the ones who have discipline and faith. The passive objects of history are the crowds lack of discipline and faith and accept theit fate as passive crowds or groups. Yes.
So this verse brings out this fact and expresses these truths by saying; There is a sign for you in the two armies met in combat. One was fightings in the cause of Allah and the other resisting on denial.
ve uhra kafiretun yeravnehum misleyhim ra’yel ayn* they, the true believers saw with their own eyes twice their number. Faithfuls look at infidels and see them twice their number. In Badir battle it was three in fact. The infidels were three times crowded from believers. The faithfuls are just 300 people and the Meccan heathens were 1000 well-armed, well-geared army. So if you take the situation as an expression of truth above time, you may approach the concept with more understanding.
vAllahu yueyyidu Bi nasrihi men yesha’ Yes, what is the main thing here? It is about whom Allah supports, which side is accompanied by truth. That’s why Qur’an says, Allah helps whoever He wishes. You don’t need a single thing if you already have Allah’s support, if you have a shelter, an aid, a friend as Allah. If you don’t have Allah, then what can you have? At this point having Allah as your support is a gain comes from your faith, discipline and effort. It is all about your value.
inne fiy zalike le ‘ibreten liulil ebsar; Certainly there is a great lesson in this for those with insight. Of course people with insights may surely read the laws of history. They read and they see. The truth shows that even with a small number of people with true mind, the few real thinkers, even they don’t have enough to stand against big crowds at first glance, they always be victorious against the rest of people, against the big and undisciplined crowds. That’s why it is a shame for who trust only the number of people with him. It is important to be with Hall, not to be with crowd. People who choose their sides just by looking where the crowd are the ones been forgotten among active subjects, among those with faith, mind and discipline.
kem min fietin kaliyletin galebet fieten kesiyraten Bi iznillah Bakara/249 Remember the verse explained the incident of Talut and Calut. There are many incidents in history like this one. A small group of people stand victorious over many crowds with their faiths and disciplines.
14-) Zuyyine linNasi hubbushehevati minen Nisai vel beniyne vel kanatiyril mukantareti minezzehebi vel fiddati vel haylil musevvemeti vel en’ami vel hars* zalike metaul hayatid dunya* vAllahu ‘indehu husnul meab;
Beautified for the people is the desire to indulge in the pleasures of women and children, heaped up sums of gold and silver, noble horses and cattle. However these are but transitory pleasures of the world. But Allah… The most beauteous goal (to attain) is with Him. (A.Hulusi)
Fair in the eyes of men is the love of things they covet: Women and sons; Heaped-up hoards of gold and silver; horses branded (for blood and excellence); and (wealth of) cattle and well-tilled land. Such are the possessions of this world’s life; but with Allah is the best of the goals (to return to). (A.Yusuf Ali)
Zuyyine linNasi hubbushehevati Beautified for the people is to have passionate love. What is this passionate love, the targets of this desire? minen Nisai women vel beniyne kids, especially sons vel kanatiyril mukantareti minezzehebi vel fiddati wealth in the forms of gold and silver vel haylil musevvemeti horses, high-priced and favorite horses vel en’ami herds and flocks vel hars lands, terrains, crops… All of these are beautified for the people is to have passionate desires and love. Qur’an says this.
In fact these were the targets of that eras desirable objects.You may transfer them to our days and change or multiply them by looking at your desires. zalike metaul hayatid dunya All those are earths temporary values. All those listed above are earths temporary values.
vAllahu ‘indehu husnul meab; but with Allah is the best of the goals. Really; which future do you want? Choose which future is really for you, then you may measure the worths of everthing whether they are really worthy or not. If your measure of worth is your lust, then you should read this verse again. Because you will surely find your greatest values among the things listed above. An important anecdote hubbushehevat the love of lust; the verse talks about a passionate desire. A passionate love. But in reality this is not love, this is by all means, desire. Friends; desire chains you, love sets your free. That’s why here the topic is about the things that put your hearts in chains, things that bind your hands, block your minds with invisible ropes; basically earthy desires for the things like women, kids, stuff or wealth. This desires are the ones which turn a person completely blind to truths including his eternal future. They tune a persons priorities to temporary future and make him sacrifice this eternal happiness for small earthy price. This verse is a danger sign for all these.
15-) Kul eunebbiukum Bi hayrin min zalikum* lilleziynettekav inde Rabbihim cennatun tecriy min tahtihel enharu halidiyne fiyha ve ezvacun mutahharetun ve ridvanun minellah* vAllahu Besiyr’un Bil’ibad;
Say, “Shall I tell you of something even better than all of this? For those who are protected in the sight of Allah there are Paradises underneath which rivers flow, they will reside therein eternally. There they will have pure spouses (this could also denote the spouse of consciousness; a perfect body free from any ailment) and the pleasure of Allah. Allah, as the essence of His servants, is the Basir. (A.Hulusi)
Say: Shall I give you glad tidings of things far better than those? For the righteous are Gardens in nearness to their Lord, with rivers flowing beneath; therein is their eternal home; with spouses purified; and the good pleasure of Allah. For in Allah’s sight are (all) His servants,- (A.Yusuf Ali)
Kul eunebbiukum Bi hayrin min zalikum Say, “Shall I tell you of something even better than all of this? lilleziynettekav inde Rabbihim cennatun tecriy min tahtihel enharu halidiyne fiyha For the righteous, for the ones who know their responsibilities for Allah are Gardens in nearness to their Rabb, with rivers flowing beneath; therein is their eternal home; ve ezvacun mutahharetun with pure spouses ve ridvanun minellah* and more which is the greatest of all, the pleasure of Allah. vAllahu Besiyr’un Bil’ibad For in Allah sees all His servants,
Allah’s sight including all His servants or a persons actions are all seen by Allah; these are in the domain of the word basiyr. There is a unity here. That’s why I translate it as a whole. Seeing something completely, not just the visual outside actions but the intentional inside ideas as well. Not just bodies but the hearts as well. Allah sees not just material actions, Allah sees the content of minds as well. Sees and decides the fate accordingly.
We also see in this verse a form of simplyfing an unknown concept for human minds . In this verse people are informed with gardens with rivers flowing beneath and pure spouses. Actually those are all metaphors for unclear concepts. They are all truths of the unknown but they are reduced to simple words so that people may understand with their limited perceptions.
16-) Elleziyne yekulune Rabbena innena amenna fagfir lena zunubena ve kina azaben nar;
They will say, “Our Rabb, we have indeed believed. Forgive us our faults and protect us from burning (suffering).” (A.Hulusi)
(Namely), those who say: “Our Lord! we have indeed believed: forgive us, then, our sins, and save us from the agony of the Fire;”- (A.Yusuf Ali)
Elleziyne yekulune Rabbena innena amenna fagfir lena Our Lord! we have indeed believed: forgive us, zunubena forgive our sins ve kina azaben nar and save us from the agony of the Fire. Very clear. Moving on.
17-) EsSabiriyne ves Sadikiyne vel Kanitiyne vel Munfikiyne vel Mustagfiriyne Bil eshar;
(They are) the patient ones, loyal, content (in submission with the comprehension of their servitude), they give (to the needy) and ask for forgiveness for their inadequacies in the early morning (the process of awakening). (A.Hulusi)
Those who show patience (firmness and self-control); who are true (in word and deed); who worship devoutly; who spend (in the way of Allah); and who pray for forgiveness in the early hours of the morning. (A.Yusuf Ali)
EsSabiriyne Patient ones; people who show patience agains challenge ves Sadikiyne loyal to their promises of faith,people who submit to Allah and won’t bow down to anything or anyone, vel Munfikiyne people who spend in the way of Allah, vel Mustagfiriyne Bil eshar; who pray for forgiveness in the early hours of the morning. Or like Ibn. Mansur explained in his Lisan-Arap book, this also means from heart, from soul, from the depth of a persons essence. People who ask for forgiveness from the depths of their souls, hearts and essences. What about all those people then? Like the verse above actually, Allah sees them. Allah sees them all.
O our Rabb, we show faith to you. Forgive us, forgive our sins and protect us from the suffering of fire. People who say this, who show patience, resistance, show loyalty to their faith, who bow down only to Allah and spend in the way of Allah, people who ask for forgiveness from the depths of their hearts with honesty. vAllahu Besiyr’un Bil’ibad; Allah sees them. Allah sees them all.
Dear friends, there is another truth revealed here. It’s asking for forgiveness from Allah. I should pass many stories come from Rasulallah about early times for now because of the time situation. But we should remember the saying of Rasuallah, “I ask for forgiveness from Allah 100 times a day.”
In fact this is knowing one’s place. Tevbe, forgiveness.. Asking forgiveness from Allah. This is another meaning of; “I know my place, o Rabb.” This is a confession of a person to realize his position. If we search the situation more closely, the real reason surfaces. This is a person’s path for knowing himself. By asking forgiveness, one also means; “I know myself, o Rabb.”
A person who says “estagfirullah”, a person who asks for forgiveness from Allah, also says “I know myself, O Rabb.” He admits his limits to Allah. He confesses his potential about knowing his place. A persons journey for learning Allah starts with knowing his place at first. This is the truth explained here. This is the message here.
18-) ShehidAllahu enneHU la ilahe illa HUve, vel Melaiketu ve ulul ‘ilmi kaimen Bil kist* la ilahe illa HUvel Aziyz’ul Hakiym;
Allah knows with certainty that none exists other than He. He is HU, there is no other, only HU… And (so do) the forces (potentials) of His names (angels; compositions of qualities that manifest through the knowledge of reality) and those of knowledge (those who possess this knowledge also know, and thus testify to this reality) and maintain themselves in accord with this truth… There is no god, only HU, the Aziz, the Hakim. (A.Hulusi)
There is no god but He: That is the witness of Allah, His angels, and those endued with knowledge, standing firm on justice. There is no god but He, the Exalted in Power, the Wise. (A.Yusuf Ali)
ShehidAllahu enneHU lâ ilâhe illâ HUve Allah knows with certainty that none exists other than He. This is the exact verse. Allah is the witness that none exists other than He. vel Melaiketu ve ulul ‘ilmi kaimen Bil kist* His angels, and those endued with knowledge, standing firm on justice acting only with justice, they are also witnesses, la ilahe illa HUvel Aziyz’ul Hakiym; There is no god, only Allah. And Allah is the owner of Power and Wisdom. Allah is witness, angels are witnesses, people of knowledge who stand firm on justice are witnesses on this truth; says Qur’an.
If you take this truth about knowing Allah as a follow up on people who know themselves, who ask for forgiveness like we described above; then this knowledge must be built over a foundation of faith like this. As in, knowing yourself is only possible if you build your truth on a firm faith foundation like this. If not, if the foundation is not like this one, than the person eventually forgets his limits. When he does, he might think himself as something more. He might even claim that he is a god.
Of course he wouldn’t say; “I’m a god, I’m a deity.”, but act like one. He acts like a god. He even tries to do Allah’s job. Tries to interfere Allah’s domain. Tries to interfere Allah’s message. Not only turns his back to Allah’s message, he might go far to create his own message and put it over Allah’s.
19-) Inned Diyne ‘indAllahil Islam* ve mahtelefelleziyne utulKitabe illa min ba’di ma caehumul ilmu bagyen beynehum* ve men yekfur Bi ayatillahi fe innAllahe seriy’ul hisab;
Indeed, the religion (system and order) in the sight of Allah is Islam (the whole of creation is in a state of submission, whether conscious or unconscious of the qualities of the Names)! Those to whom a Book (knowledge) has been given, have fallen into division after this knowledge, because of jealousy and ambition. And whoever covers the existence of Allah in His signs (which are the manifestations of His Names) indeed Allah is swift in reckoning (Allah instantly puts into effect the consequences of one’s actions; sari-ul-hisab). (A.Hulusi)
The Religion before Allah is Islám (submission to His Will): Nor did the People of the Book dissent there from except through envy of each other, after knowledge had come to them. But if any deny the Signs of Allah, Allah is swift in calling to account. (A.Yusuf Ali)
Inned Diyne ‘indAllahil Islam Then these truths complete one another. What is the only religion in the domain of Allah. It’s Islam. Islam may be used for 3 meanings. Close, peace and submission. It’s submission to Allah totally and salvation. Redemption. Of course people who submit to Allah find inner peace too. His war ends and his inner peace takes over. His heart tastes the peace. A person who realize himself and finds his inner peace, reaches his salvation. And moving on.
ve mahtelefelleziyne utulKitabe illa min ba’di ma caehumul ilmu bagyen beynehum* Those to whom a Book has been given, have fallen into division after this knowledge, because of jealousy and ambition. Yes, out of jeaously, they diset from the proofs of truths. They started to argue their faiths. ve men yekfur Bi ayatillahi fe innAllahe seriy’ul hisab; Whoever denies Allah’s message, whoever chooses to ignore Allah’s message fe innAllahe seriy’ul hisab; He should know that Allah is swift in reckoning, his account will be called soon.
20-) Fein haccuke fe kul eslemtu vechiye Lillahi ve menittebean* ve kul lilleziyne utul Kitabe vel ummiyyiyne eeslemtum* fein eslemu fekadihtedev* ve in tevellev fe innema aleykel belag* vAllahu Basiyr’un Bil’ibad;
If they argue with you say, “My face is in submission to Allah; so are those who follow me!” Ask those to whom the knowledge of reality and sunnatullah has been given and the illiterate ones (those who are unaware of this reality; the dualists), “Have you also accepted Islam?” If they submit they would have accepted the reality. But if they turn away, your duty is only to inform. Allah, as a result of His Names comprising His servants, is the Basir (evaluates). (A.Hulusi)
So if they dispute with thee, say: “I have submitted my whole self to Allah and so have those who follow me.” And say to the People of the Book and to those who are unlearned: “Do ye (also) submit yourselves?” If they do, they are in right guidance, but if they turn back, thy duty is to convey the Message; and in Allah’s sight are (all) His servants.
Fein haccuke fe kul eslemtu vechiye Lillahi ve menittebean If they argue with you, say; “I have submitted my whole self to Allah.” ve menittebean and those who follow me also submitted. ve kul ask them lilleziyne utul Kitabe vel ummiyyiyne eeslemtum those who are entrusted with the revelations and those who are ignorant to the truth. As in ask to the people of the book and the heathens eeslemtum “Have you also submitted yourselves to Allah?”
This is Islam. The other name of the constant values of humanity. That’s why Islam cannot be called a property for a single society. Islam is the name of all truths for humanity throughout the entire history and all prophets are Islam prophets. All the religions described by all prophets was indeed Islam. So people who have submitted themselves to Allah completely are called muslim, because Islam is submission.
fein eslemu fekadihtedev The verse continues, If they do, is they have also submit themselves to Allah completely, then they have also found savalation, they are in the right path. ve in tevellev fe innema aleykel belag If they choose the ignore, turn their backs, then your duty is only and only informing them. vAllahu Basiyr’un Bil’ibad; Allah sees all His servants.
21-) Innelleziyne yekfurune Bi ayatillahi ve yaktulunen Nebiyyiyne Bi gayri Hakkin ve yaktulunelleziyne ye’murune Bil kisti minen Nasi febeshirhum Bi azabin eliym;
As for those who deny the existence of Allah in His signs (the manifestations of His Names), and kill the Nabis against the will of the Reality, and kill those who enjoin justice, give them the tidings of a severe suffering! (A.Hulusi)
As to those who deny the Signs of Allah and in defiance of right, slay the prophets, and slay those who teach just dealing with mankind, announce to them a grievous penalty. (A.Yusuf Ali)
Innelleziyne yekfurune Bi ayatillahi ve yaktulunen Nebiyyiyne Bi gayri Hakkin After declaring this truth, Qur’an turns its face to Jews; which have a criminal record for killing the prophets sent to them Innelleziyne yekfurune Bi ayatillahi Those who deny Allah’s verses, messages ve yaktulunen Nebiyyiyne and kill the prophets without mercy Bi gayri Hakkin without mercy, relentlessly ve yaktulunelleziyne ye’murune Bil kisti minen Nasi and kill those who teach just dealing with mankind febeshirhum Bi azabin eliym; give them the tidings of a severe suffering.
There is a subtle irony here. Because they are in waiting for a heaven of their own. But you give them tidings of hell. Because they slaughtered their own prophets, o Muhammad. It’s not unusual for them to deny you. Not surprising at all. Because they stoned, killed, cut down, choked their own prophets which come among them.
22-) Ulaikelleziyne habitat a’maluhum fid dunya vel ahireti, ve ma lehum min nasiriyn;
They are the ones whose deeds will be worthless both in this world and the eternal life to come. There will be no helpers for them. (A.Hulusi)
They are those whose works will bear no fruit in this world and in the Hereafter nor will they have anyone to help. (A.Yusuf Ali)
Ulaikelleziyne habitat a’maluhum fid dunya vel ahireti, Those who act like that, who turn their backs to celestial message, those who play deaf against the Allah’s verses; this verse is for them. Ulaikelleziyne habitat a’maluhum fid dunya vel ahireti, They are those whose works will bear no fruit in this world and in Afterlife. How can it be possible if a man turns his back to celestial messages and still develops a peaceful philosopy independent from Allah? You cannot create a peaceful thinking without Allah, only religions may create a conscience ideology. No form of other ideologies may create a conscience concept independent from Allah. ve ma lehum min nasiriyn; There will be no helper for them.
An example for this, me friends. Think about a human, who wants to take a small orphan girl under his wings and raise her. At first you may think this is an action to be impressed, right? A poor, orphan, homeless girl and this man chooses to take her into his home and care for her. But can you still have the same feelings if you manage to look that mans heart and see these intentions? “I should raise this girl then use her for my own amusement.” What can you say if you have the power to listen to this mans heart and hear this intentions? Your reactions must be something like; “What a disgusting behaviour!”
So what makes you change your thoughts about the situation from a seen noble action to this disgustion behaviour? It’s the distinction comes from knowing the intention. And Allah knows all the intentions.
23-) Elem tera ilelleziyne utu nasiyben minel Kitabi yud’avne ila Kitabillahi li yahkume beynehum summe yetevella feriykun minhum ve hum mu’ridun;
Have you not seen those who were given a share of the revealed knowledge; they are invited to the revelation of Allah, that a judgment be made between them, but then some of them turn away and leave. (A.Hulusi)
Hast thou not turned thy vision to those who have been given a portion of the Book? They are invited to the Book of Allah, to settle their dispute, but a party of them turn back and decline (the arbitration). (A.Yusuf Ali)
Elem tera ilelleziyne utu nasiyben minel Kitabi yud’avne ila Kitabillahi li yahkume beynehum Have you not seen those who were given a share of the revelations? They are invited to the Book of Allah, to settle their dispute. summe yetevella feriykun minhum ve hum mu’ridun; but then some of them turn away from Allah’s message. But they were invited to Allah’s book earlier. As in they were called to settle their disputes by using Allah’s book. This is a historical reference.
24-) Zalike Bi ennehum kalu len temessenen naru illa eyyamen ma’dudat* ve garrehum fiy diynihim ma kanu yefterun;
This is because they think, “The fire will not touch us except for numbered days.” Their invented delusive belief is a betrayal to their religion. (A.Hulusi)
This because they say: “The Fire shall not touch us but for a few numbered days”: For their forgeries deceive them as to their own religion. (A.Yusuf Ali)
Zalike Bi ennehum kalu len temessenen naru illa eyyamen ma’dudat* Do you know why they behave like that? Because they say; “The fire will not touch us except for numbered days.” Why such a twisted idea? ve garrehum fiy diynihim ma kanu yefterun; For their forgeries deceive them as to their own religion.
They were slandering Allah. Why they fall into a twisted ideology? Because they were in thoughts that they are the chosen society. They named a irrelevant value like race which a person has no right to choose his own as a superiority reason. They fall into a celestial race mentality. This is the simplistic, most vulgar materialism. Because measuring a value, a humans value with something a human has no right to choose is nothing but a simple materialism.
25-) Fekeyfe iza ceme’nahum li yevmin la raybe fiyhi ve vuffiyet kullu nefsin ma kesebet ve hum la yuzlemun;
So how will it (their state) be when we gather them together in a period that is sure to come, and the results of their deeds are given without any injustice! (A.Hulusi)
But how (will they fare) when We gather them together against a Day about which there is no doubt, and each soul will be paid out just what it has earned, without (favor or) injustice? (A.Yusuf Ali)
Fekeyfe iza ceme’nahum li yevmin la raybe fiyhi Let’s check their destiny, destination. iza ceme’nahum li yevmin la raybe fiyhi when we gather them together in that day which there is no doubt ve vuffiyet kullu nefsin ma kesebet and each soul will be paid out just what it has earned ve hum la yuzlemun; and there will be no injustice for anyone. What will they do then? Then we will see their claims are really true. We will see how those “The fire will not touch us except for numbered days” saying, putting the holy race mentality up front every chance people; how will they pay the price of turning their backs to prophets messages? We shall see them all.
All thanks to Allah who sent these messages without limitation.
